Shanghai has two main airports: Pudong (PVG) and Hongqiao (SHA). Each has different transport connections to the city. For most first-time visitors arriving at Pudong, the Maglev + Metro combination or a direct metro line is the easiest option.
From Pudong International Airport (PVG)
Option 1: Maglev + Metro
The Maglev train from Pudong Airport to Longyang Road takes just 8 minutes at up to 430 km/h. From Longyang Road, you connect to Metro Line 2 for the city center. Total journey: around 45–60 minutes depending on your destination. Cost: around 50 CNY for the Maglev plus metro fare.
Option 2: Metro Line 2 (direct)
Metro Line 2 runs directly from Pudong Airport to People’s Square and Hongqiao Railway Station. It is slower than the Maglev (60–80 minutes) but very simple and costs around 7–9 CNY.
Option 3: DiDi or taxi
DiDi and official taxis operate from the designated areas outside arrivals. Fares to central Shanghai (People’s Square area) are typically 150–250 CNY depending on traffic. Avoid rush hour if possible.
From Hongqiao Airport (SHA)
Hongqiao Airport is closer to central Shanghai and directly connected by Metro Lines 2 and 10. The journey to People’s Square is about 30 minutes. Fares are low.
